The National Council for Children's Services was established under Section 30 of the Children Act. It is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal. Since its was inauguration on 27th September 2002, three Councils have been formed 2002 – 2005, 2005 – 2008 and the newly appointed council that will complete its term in 2011.
The Council was established to provide oversight and co-ordination of children activities in the country. This was based on the fact that there are many organizations providing one service or another to children, but hardly co-ordinated leading to duplication and wastage of resources.
Mission:To formulate policies, develop plans,monitor,co-ordinate and mobilize resources for the implementation,realization and safeguarding of the rights and welfare of the Child.
